Sligo, land of rivers, mountains, lakes and vast stretches of stunning coast line, is a county which remains hidden to many visitors to Ireland, but once they have discovered it they understand why the poet W. B. Yeats called it the land of hearts desire. Its scenery and attractions are second to none, undoubtedly amongst the best in Ireland. As the closest point on the West Coast to both Dublin and Belfast, Sligo makes an ideal touring base and holiday centre for either independent travellers or groups wanted to experience something of the wild, wonderful West. Sligo capital of the Northwest Region, is one of Irelands largest towns. It accounts for one third of the Countys population with over 20,000 residents, swelling to a daytime population of 42,000. Situated on the Garavogue River, Sligo is a thriving tourist, commercial and administrative regional centre. It is also an important location for industry with many leading multinationals based here. The Irish Government has just selected Sligo as a Gateway or Growth Centre, which will guarantee further development in the future.
