Commenting on the 2005 Budget, Philip Farrell, Chairman of national property group, Real Estate Alliance
“We welcome Minister Cowen’s changes to stamp duty in respect of first time buyers purchasing second hand properties. In light of property prices in many parts of Ireland doubling in the last five years and with the national average house price approximately €250,000, the burden on this group has been excessive to date. This group have also had to compete with investors when looking to purchase second hand property. The Ministers move today is an important one for this group and will mean that first time buyers can compete on a much more favourable ground than ever before. The full impact will not be known until next year, as first time buyers become more active in the second hand property market.”
