The Lake County

Situated in the midlands of Ireland, Westmeath is famous for its numerous lakes, especially Lough Derravaragh where the myth of the children of Lir is said to have taken place. The children were turned into swans by their stepmother for 900 years.

It also sits on the River Shannon where visitors can take to the waterways in a boat or kayak. The bustling towns of Athlone and Mullingar have great restaurants and nightlife as well as many high street shops.

Further afield, you'll find a Georgian-styled manor belonging to the Pakenham family for over 350 years, Tullynagardy Castle and Gardens, and the stunning estate of Belvedere House. The largest monastic settlement in Ireland, founded by St Fechin, can be discovered in the small village of Fore.

Westmeath is a county that has it all: the nature and scenery, the sport, great shopping, and good nightlife, particularly in Athlone and Mullingar, which are two of the most desirable areas of the county to call home.
