It is worth mentioning that the property is situated beside a disused sand quarry which has not been operational for many years and has become more of a wildlife habitat. We understand that there is no Lease or Planning in place for it to operate as a quarry, or any other business, at this time.

GURTEEN
Gurteen is a village in County Sligo, Ireland which has experienced quite a rise in development in the last number of years and has become, to some degree, a commuter town for people working in Sligo. It has a close knit community with music venues, bars, restaurants, community centre, schools, pharmacy, Post Office and shops.

MOYGARA CASTLE

Lough Gara was first mentioned in 1285 and was referred to as ‘Loch Technet’ and was later renamed ‘Loch Uí Ghadhra’. The lake and the nearby Moygara is named after the O’Gara family who ruled the area around Lough Gara since 1285 AD. The O’Gara’s built three castles, the main one was at Moygara built on the NW corner of Lough Gara. Moygara castle was thought to have been a very impressive building possibly built on the site of an earlier fortification. It is a very good example of a castellated building with many of its defensive features still evident. The oldest part of the castle is a ruined rectangular structure on the north side of the bawn wall, which may have been an earlier tower house. The gate tower was once two storeys but now lies in ruins. There are two keystones on the ground near the gate tower. These are now very weathered but one is depicted in a 1878 drawing by Wakeman, the drawing is of two figures with interwined limbs. It is thought the other is a single figure holding something in its arms. The castle was attacked in 1538 by O’Donnell and later by a band of mercenary Scots in 1581 when some of the buildings were burnt.
There is a local story that a sycamore tree near the castle is of the same shoot on which O’Gara hanged miscreants! It is also said that the castle used to have golden gates which are now hidden in Lough Gara. Moygara dates to 1500 AD, it is still in a relatively good state of preservation and is well worth a visit. Lough Gara and its beautiful surroundings in north west Roscommon is a wealth of history just waiting to be explored.

LOUGH GARA

Lough Gara is situated mainly in south Sligo in the parishes of Kilfree, Killaraght and Kilcolman, and Monasteraden with part of the lake stretching over the Sligo border into Kilnamanagh, a north Roscommon parish. From north to south the lake spans about four miles. The widest section stretches from the townland of Tawnymucklagh on the western shore, to Rathtermon and Ross on the eastern shore where more than a two and a half mile span lies. The lake lies south west of the Curlew Mountains with the town of Ballaghaderreen situated almost four miles to the southwest and the town of Boyle positioned just over four miles from its north eastern corner. Water is supplied to the lake by the Lung River, which enters at the southwestern angle, and the Breedoge River, which enters the lake at the southeastern angle. From the main upper lake the outflow is through the northeastern corner at Cuppanagh, the channel has one wide stretch about a mile long, which is called Lower Lough Gara. From that point the water flow is termed the Boyle river which flows past the town of Boyle into Lough Key and on to the Shannon. The lake has a number of islands. The main upper lake is divided into two sections with a strip of land and Clooncunny Bridge in between.
